We are on the brink of a new era in our cultural life. The ideal of equality having usurped the sovereign place of justice is the turning point toward this new era.
The ancients of old, men like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, knew that justice must come first. While equality reigns, justice and freedom will be torn asunder because true equality cannot exist without true justice. Today, the cultural elites have placed equality as the supreme good. Justice has been dethroned, true equality is dead, and freedom is on the chopping block.
Equality and freedom are paramount ideals grounded in the sacredness of human dignity. People are born with dignity as they are born in the imago Dei. Perversions of freedom and equality subvert justice, perversions of freedom and equality subvert human dignity.
This is why unborn children are not given the love and affection they deserve as humans. Infants in the womb are not seen as humans because a woman’s supposed claim to freedom is deemed more important than the equality of the child in the woman with the woman herself. Mother and child are no longer equal. The mother is superior, baby inferior.
Let justice poor down like rain. But the storm clouds of freedom and equality will never let loose their liquid life until Equality and Freedom bow down to Justice.
Our God is sovereign over both the future and the culture. While we are called to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God, the Church stands as the beacon of life and hope. Justice might not prevail within our culture, but ultimately, Justice will reign in Jesus Christ, being consummated when He has placed His enemies as His footstool. This is the hope by which we survive the equality meltdown. We have simply to “trust and obey.”
